Bulk Rice Spirits

Soju is a traditional Korean distilled spirit, often regarded as Korea’s most popular alcoholic beverage. It is typically made from rice, though other starches like barley, wheat, or sweet potatoes may also be used. Soju is distilled to a low proof, usually around 20-25% ABV, making it smoother and lighter compared to many other distilled spirits. Modern production methods may involve dilution of a higher proof distilled spirit with water to achieve the desired alcohol content.

Rice alcohol, also known as rice wine, when not distilled, is a broader category that includes spirits made directly from fermented rice. The distillation of fermented rice results in a neutral spirit that can be used as a base for various alcoholic beverages or as an ingredient in traditional medicines and culinary preparations. Rice alcohol typically has a higher ABV, around 40%, and is known for its neutral, clean flavour profile, like other grain-based spirits like vodka.

Shochu is a Japanese distilled spirit, often compared to soju, but with distinct differences in production and flavour profile. Shochu can be made from various ingredients, including rice, barley, sweet potatoes, and buckwheat, but rice Shochu (Kome Shochu) is particularly valued for its smooth texture and subtle, aromatic qualities. Shochu typically has an ABV ranging from 25% to 35% and is produced through either single or multiple distillations. Unlike Soju, which may be diluted after distillation, Shochu is often consumed at its natural strength, preserving the depth and complexity of its flavours.
